How to Romanticize Everyday Meals (Without Making It a Whole Thing)

We save the good dishes.

For holidays, for birthdays, for the people we're trying to impress. And then we eat four hundred ordinary meals a year on the chipped ones, off the counter, standing up.

I want to make a case for stopping that.

The Tuesday that changed my mind

It was our dating anniversary — yes, we mark it — and I was making something small. Nothing planned, nothing grand.

As I set the plates down it struck me that the meal being unremarkable was no reason for the table to be. The placemats were right there. So were the roses, the candle holders, the linen napkins. Five minutes of effort, and dinner felt like an occasion.

Which raised the obvious question: why had I been waiting?

The rule we all inherited — good things for special days — makes no sense once you say it out loud. The good things outlive the special days. Use them.

Linens and placemats

One set of placemats and one tablecloth will transform a table faster than anything else you can buy.

Fabric napkins are the small luxury. I use 100% cotton or 100% linen — they need steaming, but the texture is worth it. If you'd rather not iron, a blend will do the job and no one will know.

Start with the basics. Add more only when you find you're enjoying it.

Dinnerware you actually use

Keep one set that is both beautiful and practical, and use it for everything — the dinner party and the Tuesday cereal alike.

I gave away my gold-rimmed "fancy" set and my chipped everyday plates, and replaced both with one handmade stoneware set. It's white, so it looks clean on open shelves. It has texture I like touching. And it's dishwasher safe, because I love to cook and do not love washing up.

One set, used daily, beats two sets where the better one is hiding in a cabinet.

Glassware

Pour the drink out of the can. Pour it into a glass.

It takes four seconds and it changes the entire feeling of the meal. This is the single cheapest upgrade on this list.

Something from outside

A sprig of rosemary. Three stems from the garden. A bowl of whatever fruit is in season.

A bud vase holding one flower does more for a table than an elaborate centerpiece, and it takes a minute.

Soft light

Candles. That's the whole tip.

The overhead light makes dinner feel like a task. A candle hurricane or a beaded candle holder makes it feel like something you chose.

Every meal is the occasion

None of this is about perfection. It's about deciding that the ordinary parts of your life are worth a little beauty — because the ordinary parts are most of your life.

Set the table. Light the candle. Use the good bowl.
