Some things are worth slowing down for.
Fifteen years ago, I left the pace of Miami for the quieter rhythms of North Carolina β and somewhere between the move and the clay, Muddy Heart was born.
I'm Meli, the one-woman studio behind every piece you see here. My husband Steve and our furbaby Phoebe keep me company in my Cary, NC studio, where I spend my days handforming ceramics the way I believe they should be made: slowly, intentionally, and with care that outlasts the trend cycle.
Made by Hand. Made to Last.
Every mug, bowl, vase, and bell that leaves this studio passes through my hands β shaped, glazed, and fired one piece at a time. There are no shortcuts, no assembly lines, and no two pieces that are exactly alike. That's not a flaw. That's the point.
I work in 18 neutral, earthy finishes chosen specifically to disappear into your home rather than compete with it. Whether your space leans Japandi, Warm Minimalist, or simply calm, Muddy Heart pieces are designed to belong there quietly.
My design inspiration comes from vintage objects, historical pottery, modern design and my travels around the world. Each piece is unique, with a minimal aesthetic and a useful purpose β the intent behind every design is timeless beauty and function.
Why Ceramics?
I started making ceramics because I needed something real β something that required presence, patience, and my actual hands. What I didn't expect was how much that need would resonate with other people.
The customers who find Muddy Heart are usually looking for the same thing I was: a home that feels intentional. Objects that carry meaning. A slower kind of beautiful.
That's what I make. That's what I'm here for.

Woman-owned. Made to order. Sustainably crafted.
Every piece is made to order in my North Carolina studio β which means it's made for you, not a warehouse shelf. Please allow a few weeks for creation; good things take time.
Sustainability sits at the heart of my small studio. I make the pieces my customers ask for, in the colors and sizes they choose, so nothing is made just to sit on a shelf β and less clay, glaze and energy goes to waste. It's a slow, beautiful process, meant to be loved and treasured, and gentle on the earth my materials come from.
I can't wait to create something truly unique just for you. Thank you for taking the time to get to know me and my process.
